What is DIRCO authentication in South Africa?

DIRCO authentication is a process by which the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) verifies the authenticity of a document issued by a South African government department or institution. This is done when a document is required to be used in a foreign country and the that country is not part of the Hague Convention, 1961. The Apostille procedure is thus not sufficient in these circumstances and requires a further step in the authentication process.
